Advice on Non-Working Kits

Although it would be preferable to have a kit work first time, it should not be considered a disaster or a write off if it doesn't. In fact you will probably learn more about electronics from a kit that fails to work first time than from one that does. Try to look upon it as gaining extra experience in electronics. But of course it can still be a frustrating experience. We know as we have been there too!

Do It Yourself Repair Option

Normally some basic fault finding will soon locate the problem. We suggest you obtain a low cost book published by Banabi Electronics Books (www.babanibooks.com) called Fault-finding Electronic Projects by R A Penfold. This little book will prove to be a very worthwhile investment.

Please also refer to our Basic Project Kit Fault Finding Guide. This outlines some simple fault finding techniques that should get you going.

Please remember that all of the kits that we sell are tried and tested designs. We have built and tested these kits and they have operated perfectly so we know that the circuit designs can be trusted. In many cases the circuits are textbook designs that have a long track record of service in the field. In addition to this, components supplied with the kits are only sourced from quality assured suppliers who manufacture their products to internationally recognised standards. A faulty component is very unlikely as these are really a one-in-a-million occurrence with modern component manufacturing and quality assurance methods. Our kits are sold world-wide in tens of thousands per year so any design or component faults are quickly brought to our attention by our suppliers.

As you will appreciate, it is impossible for us to fault find a kit for you by email, letter or telephone but we are happy to give you some basic advice.

If all else fails...

We do not operate a free repair service and are unable to offer refunds on kits once assembly has been started. We expect you to do your own fault finding. This is because you pay less for the kits than the ready built versions and also because we have no control over their assembly and operation. You will find that this policy is standard practice amongst retailers of electronic project kits.

Instead, we operate a Get-You-Going service. Under this service, you can return the kit(s) to us together with appropriate payment based on the individual price paid for each kit being returned (see fee table below).

The kit(s) will be tested and where economically viable repaired by one of our technicians. If they determine that the fault was caused by a defectively manufactured component or incorrect circuit design, we will either repair or replace the kit completely free of charge and a full refund of the Get-You-Going fee paid will be made. If the fault is found to be the result of incorrect assembly by the purchaser, the item will be repaired or replaced as appropriate at no further cost to you. We reserve the right to deem a kit to be beyond economic repair where the damage is too extensive.

INDIVIDUAL KIT PURCHASE PRICE

GET-YOU-GOING FEE (PER KIT)

UNDER £10.00 £19.95
UNDER £20.00 £29.95
UNDER £50.00 £39.95
OVER £50.00 £59.95

We appreciate that this service might appear to be expensive but testing and repairing kits is no different to having a television or other appliance repaired. We have to employ the same qualified service engineers to do the work and it can take considerable time to locate the fault.
